As part of an upcoming article in Life in His Hands Christian Newspaper, we sat with Riverside Ward 3 City Council Member Mike Soubirous to discuss his love for Jesus Christ and his role as an elected official. From this interview, we learned that there is a weekly prayer meeting at City Hall that is open to the public.
LIHH: You were telling me when I came in (to your office for this interview), that there is a prayer event on the roof (of city hall)?
Mike Soubirous: Actually, yes. Something that I dedicated, that I promised the Lord that I would do when I first got elected, and I ran across a numbers of roadblocks, and time, and trying to find a pastor who would be able to come out once a week. It’s interesting—Pastor Kim, he runs a Korean Church, and he’s from Korea originally. We had met at a National Day Of Prayer service about a year ago . . .. He had met me here, and we talked, and then just out of the blue about 3-4 months ago he says, “Let’s meet up.” I said, “okay.” So we talked over lunch, and we kind of talked about some things that have gone on at city hall that I find very dramatic, and I actually find as miraculous—huge changes here. Needless to say, he said, “We need to pray.” I said, “Interesting you brought that up because I’ve been wanting to do that and get it started, it’s just not happened as much as I’ve tried to get the word out to different city employees or anybody in the community that wants to come out and pray. So he says, “Let’s do it. Pick a time.” And I said, “okay.”
So “At 7:45 am, every Monday morning, we meet on the 7th floor of City Hall, we walk up to our Helipad, and we have a clear 360-degree view of the city. What an awesome way to start out a Monday and start out the day, praying for our city, praying for our people, praying for all the different governmental agencies surrounding us, while actually what we are standing on top of is City Hall.”
“It’s open to anybody in the public and I would hope that we could get a lot of our city employees that are interested because our security guard chief that’s contract downstairs, he is a pastor of a church, and he says there are quite a few Christians that work for the city. And He is also passing our flyers (about the prayer event) for me and he’s encouraging what I’m doing, and is going to spread the word as much as possible.
