Inland Empire Christian Media
In the world of Christian radio in the Inland Empire, one station, by nature, has the entire world in mind. From humble studios in Corona, KCWGThetruth.com is broadcasting across the planet via the web, forgoing a traditional local frequency on the dial.
Owned and operated by Pastor Frank Starks and his wife of 34 years, Cassandra, KCWGTheTruth.com is broadcasting 24/7/365 playing a format of Christian music categorized as Gospel. Gospel and Urban/contemporary Gospel are recent sub-genres of Christian music. Christian hip hop is a subtype of urban/contemporary gospel music. The radio format is marketed primarily to African-American adults.
“Most stations that play Gospel, only play it on Sundays,” Starks says. “We may be the only station playing Gospel all-day, every-day, this side of the Mississippi.” Artist who can be heard on KCWGTheTruth.com include The Arkansas Gospel Mass Choir, Hezekiah Walker, Tamela Mann, Smokie Norful, Tye Tribbett, and André Chrouch. “We can go as Hip-Hop as Lecrae, and as far back as Arithia Franklin and Shirley Caesar,” Starks continues from the chair in the producers studio as he runs the board for a live call-in show. “We play the top 10 songs in the Gospel format that are straight from Billboard magazine.”
The Starks also own InHimRadio.com, a Contemporary Christian Music format station broadcasting out of the same building. InHimRadio.com plays artists such as Kutless, Matt Redman, Hillsong United, Jars of Clay, Third Day, Mercy Me, Steven Curtis Chapman and many more.
What started out as a two-hour weekly radio show about marriage, led to the Starks jumping into an industry they know nothing about. Pastor Frank Starks tells the story of their journey with KCWGTheTruth.com stating that he and Cassandra, “Were on KCWG as hosts to talk about marriage. We started doing a show called ‘Rekindling the Flame and Romance’. We kept our show on the station for about three years, and the owners . . . decided to move on and do some other things. They asked Cassandra and I if we would carry out the vision. So we purchased KCWG in August of 2013.”
“We thought we were going to go into missions to help get the Gospel all over the world,” Cassandra says. “But when the opportunity came up to buy the station, we knew that God had other plans for our desire to work in a worldwide ministry.”
Through the power of online streaming, KCWGTheTruth.com is truly focused on taking God’s Word global, all from Corona. “It’s great to wake up in the morning and you can see people listening from Brazil, you’ve got Ireland, you got Albania . . . Trinidad, Canada and Nigeria,” says Pastor Starks.
Being an internet only station, the most common way to listen to the Christian broadcast is by use of an online format. The Listen Life link at KCWGthetruth.com will bring the station to life on any computer, and the TuneIn radio app will allow smartphone users to find the local streaming station. If none of these options are available for a listener, a phone number is available for those who want to call and listen. By dialing (716) 748-0319 listeners can hear a direct feed from the KCWGTheTruth.com studios.
Along with being one of the only stations on the West Coast playing the Gospel format, KCWGTheTruth.com also provides opportunities for pastors, ministers, or talk show hosts to schedule and air a radio program. “We’re looking for churches who want to feed live to the world,” says Pastor Starks. “We have the capability to stream from your pulpit online and to the masses.”
Other programs currently airing on KCWGTheTruth.com include ‘Rekindling the Flame of Romance,’ the flagship program hosted by Pastor and Cassandra Starks. The program airs Tuesdays at 7 pm Pacific. ‘Understanding the Times’, with host Jan Markell, is “A compelling look at current events, Bible Prophecy and apologetics with interviews of well-known authors and prominent leaders from around the world,” according to the KCWGTheTruth.com website. The show airs Friday evenings at 8 pm.
On Fridays at 11 am, ‘The Bible Study Hour’ with Mark Huffman is aired. On Wednesday at 6 pm, ‘The Legal Hour with Attorney Brian Meek’ brings a question and answer session with an attorney to the live stream. “We also have a Veterans show, a relationship show, a Christian show from the UK, and one from a church in Texas,” Pastor Starks says as he talks about the open time slots for shows. “We want people to be on this station that the Holy Spirit brought.”
When they are not at the station, Pastor Starks and his wife are back in their comfort zone ministering to married couples. “We hold marriage conferences, we speak at marriage conferences. We do date nights, and try to bring marries couples together,” Pastor Starks says. “Our goal is to unite them as friends. If they can be friends, all the other problems go away.”
From intimate relationships to reaching the masses, the Starks have plenty of experience. As they raised three children of their own, the couple have provided emergency shelter to nearly 800 foster children over the last 25 years. The story of the growth and reach of KCWGTheTruth.com is still being written, but it shown that God has put the right people in the right place to manage this piece of His worldwide ministry.
